KUDOS TO ...

... The Post for publishing the net worth of all state legislators. I now know who I can comfortably support, even though I may not know everything about him or her.

If someone like Rep. Carl Domino, R-Jupiter, is worth $41''million, I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that he will care nothing about what we, as a solidly middle-class family, face day-to-day. Such legislators probably will care what the residents of Jupiter Island and Palm Beach want. I will not care whether someone is Democrat, Republican or Independent. I will vote against anyone whose net worth is more than $1 million and urge fellow voters to do the same.

I also ask that you follow that article with one for other elected officials. If the government reflected the population demographics, we might see changes for the better.

He won with roughly 66 percent of the vote. (Read More)

Realtors pick fight with Democrat

By Opinion Staff
Palm Beach Post Blog - August 27th, 2008

After Tuesday's primary, voters in Palm Beach County's House District 83 can be sure of one thing: it's going to be a competitive race come November.

...[the] Realtors Political Activity Committee, threw money — unsuccessfully — at its preferred Democrat — yes, Democrat — Rick Ford. That means the Realtors didn't want to face Mr. Ford's opponent, Bryan Miller, in the general election.

They won't get their way. Mr. Miller handily defeated Mr. Ford. The win is sure to empower Mr. Miller...If the Democrats want to retake the state House, this is the sort of district they have to win...

So what's all this mean for Mr. Miller...He can portray himself as the grass-roots Democrat going up against the big mean election machine...[Miller] doesn't need more money than Rep. Domino to win. Mr. Miller just needs enough to get his message out.

Riled voters want to cull legislators, hopeful contends

By Bill DiPaolo
Palm Beach Post - August 5th, 2008

"Are you an incumbent?"

"No."

"Great. Come on in. Let's talk."

That's often the conversation Florida House candidate Bryan Miller says he has when he knocks on voters' doors. Zooming gas prices, tanking property values and declining municipal services have combined to make voters angry and determined to see change in Tallahassee, he said.

"More people, especially young people, are interested in politics. People are fed up with the status quo. They want change, now," Miller said.

Miller, Ford Square Off; Domino Awaits

By Michael C. Bender
Palm Beach Post Blog - August 5th, 2008

Two Democrats — Rick Ford and Bryan Miller — are squaring off for the right to challenge Republican Rep. Carl Domino for his fourth and final term representing Jupiter-based state House District 83.

Post reporter Bill DiPaolo writes today that Ford, who came within 627 votes of unseating the incumbent last year, said his 1982 bankruptcy could help his campaign.

“People are struggling. I understand the devastation they and their families are going through. I’ve been there,” Ford said.
For Miller, he said his door-step conversations with voters usually go this way:

“Are you an incumbent?” “No” “Great. Come on in. Let’s talk.”

Dems Irked at Ford

But some Dems are irked because Ford prominently mentions St. Lucie County Sheriff Ken Mascara, who is a union-backed star in Treasure Coast Democratic politics and who didn't become sheriff until more than four years after most of the underlying events in the case took place.

"Ken Mascara is a Democrat, and Rick Ford should never have slandered him in such a manner," scolded Palm Beach-Treasure Coast AFL-CIO President Pat Emmert in an e-mail blast to north county Dems.

Domino faces taxing issue in unexpected GOP primary

By George Bennett
Palm Beach Post - February 25th, 2008

State Rep. and Portability Paterfamilias Carl Domino, R-Jupiter, has spent months gearing up for a reelection battle over property-tax relief.

But he didn't expect to duke it out over the issue in a Republican primary.

Domino may be headed toward such a fight now that former South Florida Water Management District Director John "Woody" Wodraska has opened a Republican campaign for Domino's north county District 83 seat. ... Wodraska says he decided to challenge Domino because he's worried that District 83 could fall into Democratic hands after Domino's close call in 2006.

... Domino squeaked to victory over barely financed Dem Rick Ford in 2006 and is expected to face another close race in 2008 against either Ford or attorney Bryan Miller, an amply connected Democratic lawyer who has raised more than $100,000 to Domino's $35,609. ...

"I think Bryan Miller is going to be much better-funded opposition" than Ford was in 2006, Wodraska said.

Miller and Domino both opposed a tax reform plan last year that was subsequently struck down by courts. But Miller said he liked the plan's proposal to supersize homestead exemptions, which would make property taxes more "progressive." Domino says Miller's use of "progressive" appears to be a veiled call for an income tax - a charge Miller emphatically denies. (Read More)

Of the 81 state House incumbents seeking reelection in 2008, Rep. Carl Domino, R-Jupiter, is the only one being beaten by an opponent in outside fund raising. Big-money brawl in '08: Domino vs. Miller

Column: Political challengers cause unnecessary stir

By Tony Plakas
South Florida Sun-Sentinel - September 13th, 2007

... Democrat Rick Ford's reaction to Bryan Miller's primary challenge was an unashamed entitlement plea. Both want the shot to unseat Republican incumbent Carl Domino in Florida House District 83, and Ford believes that his 2006 near-miss validates his case for party backing. His supporters have suggested no one has the right to challenge him. Their rationale, apparently, is since at first he did not succeed, he should have an unobstructed opportunity to try, try again.

But Miller founded the Democratic Professionals Council a few years back, and his success in organizing voting professionals will go down in local history. In fact, his model has been replicated throughout the state and has gained attention from national political figures. A year out, he has already raised twice what Ford raised to compete in 2006 and is recognized as an exceptionally adept candidate by practically anyone who meets him. In addition to lacking Ford's self-professed, growing laundry list of potential political weaknesses, Miller is a natural selection for a competition that must favor the survival of the fittest in order to secure a victory. MILLER RESPONDS TO FORD'S DESPERATE ATTACKS

(Jupiter, FL) Earlier this week, Rick Ford issued a press release about fellow Democratic candidate, Bryan Miller, suggesting that Miller does not have the fiscal responsibility to serve as State Representative. The attack is not only completely inaccurate, but extremely hypocritical given Ford’s own personal fiscal record.

For over a decade, Ford has continuously failed to pay taxes both to the state of Florida and to the IRS. He has also engaged in numerous other financial improprieties which he has not disclosed in full to the voters.

“People have had enough of Washington style personal, political attacks,” said Miller. “In 2006, Florida voters overwhelmingly rejected the campaigns of politicians who engaged in these tactics. Sadly my opponent did not get the message.”

Miller’s grass roots organization has obtained almost 2,000 ballot signatures, making him the first Democrat ever in a north county legislative race to qualify by petition. In addition, nearly 600 people have personally invested in his campaign, helping him set the fastest fundraising pace of any House challenger in the history of Florida.

By comparison, Ford is several hundred petitions short of qualifying for the ballot and has raised almost no money. He recently stated in an email to supporters that he needed $100,000 to run a “credible" race.

“My opponent should spend more time trying to convince people why they should support his campaign and less time attacking the character of others,” said Miller.

Bryan Miller, a Jupiter resident, is a Democratic candidate running for the State House, District 83, which includes most of Northern Palm Beach County.

MILLER CALLS ON SPEAKER TO INVESTIGATE PHANTOM VOTE BY DOMINO/ROBAINA

(Jupiter, FL) - Bryan Miller, Candidate for Florida House of Representatives in District 83, is calling on House Speaker Marco Rubio to investigate whether Representative Carl Domino knowingly asked Representative Julio Robaina to vote for him on April 17, 2008, when he was not in the Chamber.

This issue came to light in a blog entry the following day in the Palm Beach Post written by Michael Bender and was also reported yesterday when Allen Mergaman filed a complaint with Speaker of the House, Marco Rubio, that Representatives Domino and Robaina violated House Rule 9.5(a).

When asked about the complaint, Miller said, “it appears that Mr. Domino skipped out of the Capitol to visit one of his campaign donors at taxpayer expense, then tried to cover this up by having someone else vote for him.” According to the House Rules, Speaker Rubio has five days from the receipt of a complaint to take action on it.

Bryan Miller, a Jupiter resident, is a Democratic candidate running for the State House, District 83, which includes most of Northern Palm Beach County.
